Guk-Hyun Nam
Did you know that Hangul, our beloved Korean alphabet, has a secret mathematical side? While most of us are familiar with King Sejong’s creation of Hangul in 1443, few realize that the shapes of the consonants are actually based on articulatory phonetics. The design of each letter represents the shape of the mouth, tongue, and teeth when pronouncing that sound. This ingenious feature makes Hangul not just a writing system, but a visual representation of human speech!
As we approach Hangul Day on October 9th, our school libraries are excited to offer unique activities that celebrate the beauty and ingenuity of our alphabet. We invite all students to join us in honoring this remarkable linguistic achievement.
Junior School Library: Handcrafted Hangul Bookmarks
Our Librarian, Mr. Nam, will be showcasing the art of Hangul calligraphy during break and lunch times on October 9th. Students are welcome to visit the Junior School Library to receive a personalized, hand-written Hangul bookmark. These beautiful pieces of art will not only mark your place in your favorite books but also serve as a reminder of the elegance and simplicity of our alphabet.

First School Library: Creative Coloring with Hangul
For our younger students, Ms. Bansard has prepared a special treat in the First School Library. A creative coloring activity awaits, where children can add their personal touch to Hangul characters. This hands-on experience allows our youngest learners to engage with the alphabet in a fun and memorable way, fostering an early appreciation for Korean language and culture.

These activities are part of our school’s Korean Enrichment Week, emphasising the importance of Korea’s linguistic heritage. We encourage all students to participate and discover new aspects of Hangul that they might not have considered before.
Join us in celebrating Hangul Day and embracing the unique features of our alphabet that make it a true marvel in the world of writing systems. Let’s come together to honor our language, culture, and the innovative spirit that Hangul represents.
Visit our libraries on October 9th to be part of this special celebration. Happy Hangul Day, everyone!
